Social and Emotional Learning

in High School:

Self-Management

The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) identifies self-management as one of the five core competencies of social and emotional learning. Self-management includes a number of different soft skills including but not limited to the following:

  • Impulse control
  • Stress management
  • Self-discipline
  • Self-motivation
  • Goal-setting
  • Organizational skills

As teens take on more and more adult roles and greater independence it is essential that they develop self-management skills. Practicing and honing these skills in a supportive classroom community prepares them for the challenges they will face as they continue to mature.
