Lesson Planet
Written to introduce pupils to buoyancy, this activity has collaborative groups work to design a floatable clay boat. They first observe that a stick of clay sinks in water and then are given their own stick to reshape into a floating boat. Once they succeed, they test for how much their boats can hold without sinking. Though this is a classic laboratory activity for young scientists, the lesson plan does not offer any scientific explanation for buoyancy.
