What a great way to incorporate Judith Viorst's story, Alexander, Who Used to Be Rish Last Sunday, with a math lesson on money. Second graders listen to the story being read while the teacher stops to record each time Alexander spends money on an item. Then, young mathematicians use plastic or paper money to explore the possible coin combinations he spent on each item. It is important to emphasize to learners that each combination should be arranged with the smallest number of coins possible. Once figured out, pupils cut out paper coins and item labels and glue them on a poster to display their solutions. A great activity for keepin learners engaged.
