Depressions are sustained troughs in the business cycle characterized by declines in output, employment, income, and trade. While they date from the earliest years of American history, little is known about them from the Colonial Era. Before 1815, depressions were caused primarily by external economic forces such as wars or disasters. With capitalism, they became more pervasive. This article discusses the different depressions in American history that we have data about.
