Beyond Mannahatta: The Welikia Project

Curated by ACT

The Welikia Project examined what the landscape of New York City looked like in 1609. Use the map to explore the city then and compare it to today. Provides a collection of thirteen lessons for upper elementary but which can be adapted to any grade level. The Science section explains the process of developing the map and determining the range of species that made up the ecosystem then. Includes a TED Talk video of Dr. Eric Sanderson discussing the Mannahatta Project.
