Nervous system signals are transmitted electrically along individual neurons, but neurons are separated from each other by a tiny gap. Chemical messengers called neurotransmitters cross the gap between neurons. Neurotransmitters fit into special receptor sites on receiving neurons. In this instructional activity students understand this concept by playing a simple card game to learn the sequence of events involved in transmitting signals through the nervous system.
