Instructional Ideas
- While locating pictures for their biome posters, ask student groups to find pictures of natural and man-made disasters as well; this will cut down on your work load in preparing for the second phase of the project
- Spend some time at the beginning of the unit to get a handle on prior knowledge; an extensive background in biomes is not necessary for success, but it may be helpful to partner up lower-level pupils with their stronger classmates for the project
Classroom Considerations
- Schedule time for research in your school's computer lab or library; research will take more than one class period
- Don't underestimate the number of magazines your class will need to complete their biome projects; each poster requires a minimum of six pictures of biotic and abiotic factors
Pros
- The resource contains all printable materials plus suggestions for modifying biome posters to reflect man-made and natural disasters
- Learning groups will experience a bigger buy-in on biomes when "disaster" strikes the biome they created together
Cons
- SMART Board technology plays a key role across several days of learning, which could be challenging for teachers with a different technology setup
