- Rather than having all class group prepare presentations on Washington's "Atlanta Compromise" speech, provide each group with a different topic asking some to develop presentations on the background topics while one group develops the presentation on Washington and another presents DuBois's response to Washington's ideas
- Expand the scope of the debate by asking class members to consider whether or not schools should offer vocational classes where students can learn about various trades
