Use a graphic organizer to get readers thinking about main ideas as they record the who, what, where, when, and why of a story. Consider modeling this process completely before kids do this independently. They fill in five boxes charting the key details of a text and then write the main idea at the bottom. Encourage learners to use the details they have recorded to help them come up with central themes or ideas. More advanced scholars can add a how box and those who struggle with this could work in pairs.
