Capacitor Lab

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

The first capacitor was a Leyden jar, invented in 1745. Physics scholars explore capacitors in an engaging simulation. They may view one or set up circuits which contain two to three either in series or parallel. Other views include total capacitance, stored charge, stored energy, and other measurements. They may also insert a dielectric into a capacitor to view its effects.

Instructional Ideas
  • Model for classes how to use the simulation and then allow pairs to explore, giving them specific measurements to recreate
Classroom Considerations
  • When teachers register for free, they can access related resources and lesson plans for each simulation
  • Assumes learners have some understanding of capacitors and circuits
Pros
  • Simulation shows a number of different measurements and allows for multiple manipulations
  • Easy to incorporate into a lesson
Cons
  • None
