Cell Diffusion and Permeability: The See-Thru Egg Lab

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Create a model to study a microscopic phenomenon. The seventh of 12 lessons uses an egg (without its shell) to represent a cell membrane. Using different solutions, learners explore the concept of cell diffusion. They monitor measurements of the egg before and after being exposed to the liquids. A comparison of the measurements allows individuals to make conclusions about the permeability of the membrane.

Instructional Ideas
  • Have pupils complete the lab write up electronically and add pictures of the eggs with their corresponding measurements
Classroom Considerations
  • Lab preparation requires three days to dissolve egg shells
  • Expects a basic understanding of cell components and cell diffusion
Pros
  • Provides background information for use before the lab activity
  • Includes a teacher guide with a sample solution key
Cons
  • None
