I absolutely love this idea. Kids explore the chiaroscuro technique as they draw, then bite, then write about an apple. They discuss chiaroscuro, depth, shade, perspective, and texture. Then they draw their apples, write a descriptive paragraph about their apples, take a bite of their apples, drawing the changes they observe. They write a second paragraph describing what it was like to bite the apple; they eat the apple to the core, draw it again and finish off their highly descriptive, sensory-loaded paragraphs. This lesson is full of learning!
