Circles: A Geometric Perspective

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet
This Circles: A Geometric Perspective unit plan also includes:

Circles are the foundation of many geometric concepts and extensions - a point that is thoroughly driven home in this extensive unit. Fundamental properties of circles are investigated (including sector area, angle measure, and relationships between different kinds of segments), but the influence of the circle in other arenas (polygon area, dilations, rotations on the coordinate plane to name a few) is also teased out. Young geometers use discovery learning to really dive into the circle, with pencil-and-straight edge construction being emphasized in addition to the use of online geometric tools.

Instructional Ideas
  • Could be adapted to a flipped-classroom model (though not presented that way), with extensive discovery and synthesis activities
Classroom Considerations
  • Activities are highly dependent on one another, referencing notes and conclusions from previous work (considerations for student absences)
  • Access to geometry tools (compass & protractor) and Internet access needed throughout the unit
Pros
  • Exceptionally thorough and detailed activities, teacher notes and worksheets
  • Students are led to consider underlying concepts, not just memorize patterns
  • Excellent examples of current use of construction methods, not just historical referencing
Cons
  • In class activity 7.3 the teacher notes mention "Students will need to have access to dynamic geometry software for parts 2 and 3 of this task."  However, this software is not referenced again in the activity or suggestions given of online options
  • The last link on last page of Ready set go! for 7.5 is a broken pdf (p. 43) "http://plus.maths.org/content/what4area4circle"
  • At the end of the teacher notes for 7.10, the link "http://ceemrr.com/Geometry2/Pyramid_Cone/Pyramid_Cone_print.html" is broken
  • No teacher keys for student worksheets
  • No final summative assessment provided
