Circuits and Magnetic Fields

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Have your class use compasses to try to find the magnetic field around an electric current. Groups use the same technique to visualize magnetic fields as they did in the second activity in the series, but this time, the field is created by an electric current. Through the activity, pupils become aware of the three-dimensional magnetic field.

Instructional Ideas
  • Encourage groups to experiment to see how they can change the direction or strength of the magnetic field
Classroom Considerations
  • The class should be familiar with the movement of a charge in an electrical circuit
  • The wire will get hot, therefore the groups may want something to hold the wire up
  • Sixth of the eight-part series
Pros
  • The procedure includes a section for pupils to investigate on their own
  • The resource contains troubleshooting tips that will be helpful during the activity
