[Free Registration/Login may be required to access all resource tools.] The following online tutorial describes how a covalent bond forms, including the energy change involved in the process.Students will be asked to use the octet rule to draw Lewis electron dot structures for simple molecules and to know how and when to incorporate double and triple bonds into the structures. The module helps students understand how a coordinate covalent bond differs from other covalent bonds and they should be able to draw Lewis structures for polyatomic ions. Students will understand the concept of resonance and learn some common exceptions to the octet rule. Lastly, they will relate bond energy to the stability and reactivity of molecules.
