This is the text of the short story "The Brute" by Joseph Conrad. A ship is known as The Brute because of its perceived knack for killing at least one sailor on every one of its voyages, but instead of frightening men away, the bolder ones seek the challenge of surviving the journey so they can brag about it. But this voyage has an unexpected tragedy.
