Wealthy merchant families dominated the economy, society, and politics of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century New York City. Many merchant families associated with Columbia University derived their wealth from trading in slaves and goods produced by slaves. In turn, the wealth of these families financed the College. This article highlights a few of these families.
