Columbia University: Restoring Byzantium

An exhibition on the restoraion of the Kariye Camii, a Byzantine church in Istanbul, Turkey, that is also known as the church of the Chora Monastery. This church was likely built in the sixth century, rebuilt around 1100 AD, then restored by Theodore Metochites, the prime minister of the Byzantine Empire, between 1316 and 1321. Later restoration work was undertaken by the Byzantine Institute of America in the 20th century. The website presents the history, images, virtual tours, artworks, restoration work, and historic photos.
