Read aloud your choice of books about counting on and counting back (a list is provided, or tell stories of your own). Your learners will write horizontal equations to portray what happens in the story. They build a paper chain and remove links while the class sings "Six Little Ducks." Finally, they write a vertical equation to represent each duck's disappearance. (I'd include an addition sentence to show what happens at the end when they all come running back: 0+6=6!)
