Discovering Lewis & Clark: Flag Presentations

Lewis and Clark usually distributed flags at more or less formal councils with the chiefs and headmen of the tribes they encountered, one flag for each tribe or independent band. Along with a gift flag to the apparent chief went an array of other presents that were more widely distributed among the headmen and major warriors including peace medals, commissions (paroles), and clothing.
