Once a gene has been located and transcribed into mRNA, it must first be edited before it can be translated into a protein. This editing process is called splicing it involves removing non-coding regions called "introns", leaving only the protein coding "exons" . In the cell the introns are removed by special enzymes which recognise specific sequences, these enzymes cut and rejoin the coding regions for translation into protein.
