The map is color-coded to show land elevations ranging from below sea level in southern California to above 6,500 feet. The map shows the principal terrain features of the Pacific Highlands, Great Interior Basin, Rocky Mountains, Mississippi Valley, Great Central Plain, Arctic Plain, Labrador Plateau, St. Lawrence Valley, Appalachian Highlands, Atlantic Slope, Gulf Plain, Mexican Plateau, Yucatan Peninsula, and Panama Isthmus. The drainage divides are indicated, as well as the mean isotherms of 32 degrees F. and 70 degrees F. An outline map of Kansas at the same map scale shows comparative area size.
