App Overview
Using this Application:
- The home screen is a color-coded periodic table displaying only the chemical symbol and number
- As you tap on an element, the box enlarges to reveal the name, classification, group, period, and atomic mass
- Touch this box, and it flips over to a list of further choices: General, Basic information, Discoverer, Picture element, and Products for analytical testing
- Tap anywhere on the always-visible periodic table to return to a full-screen view
- To close a list or an element box, tap anywhere on the periodic table screen to return to it
- The letter M in the upper left-hand corner reveals several manipulative reference tools
Tools Included:
- A Search by element feature
- Classification by a variety of physical or chemical properties
- Atomic properties displayed in order of the periodic table or in chart form
- A sliding thermometer that changes the color of the element boxes according to the state of matter at each temperature
- A comprehensive Property ranking chart, sortable by any column
- A sliding timescale of when each element was discovered with pictures of the discoverer appearing in place of the element symbol on the periodic table

Instructional Ideas
Keep tablets on hand with this application available as a reference for anytime your class needs to obtain information about any element.
Use this as a source of information or a starting point when assigning individual research on different elements. Commission each student with a different element to become an expert on, and then have them teach it to the rest of the class.
For younger learners, prepare an interactive lecture using EMD PTE as a way of introducing the periodic table of elements for the first time.
Classroom Considerations
Because the words "Periodic Table" at the bottom of the icon are so tiny, you may want to make it clear to your class that the app is titled EMD PTE.
Designed by the German company, EMD Millipore Chemicals, the spelling of some elements will be slightly different from American English.
Within the General feature for several elements, the British English word, "superlativ" is to identify elements that exhibit extreme properties or serve notable purposes in the universe. For example, argon is the most abundant noble gas in Earth's atmosphere. Strangely, "superlative" is written with the American English spelling in the Glossary feature.
Note that in the Products for analytical testing feature, for every element, there is a link to the EMD Chemicals website available so that you might purchase your chemicals from them.
Pros
- Colorful periodic table serves as home screen
- User-friendly
Cons
- Grammatical inconsistencies
