Encyclopedia Britannica: Isaac Burns Murphy

Curated by ACT

This entry from Encyclopedia Britannica features Isaac Burns Murphy, an American jockey who was the first to be elected to the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York; he is one of only two African American jockeys to have received this honour (the other is Willie Simms). Some sportswriters referred to him as the "colored Archer" in reference to the English champion jockey Frederick Archer. Other sportswriters suggested that Archer should instead be referred to as the "white Murphy.".
