Environmental Studies: The Environment Rocks!

Rock exploration, so exciting! After reading the book Everybody Needs a Rock, the class makes sandwiches to better understand that the Earth is made in layers. They then use a description of the 3 types of rock to conduct an observation of the 3 types of desserts they have. Each dessert is supposed to represent a type of rock (via its characteristics). This instructional activity is novel and kids will enjoy it but, why not examine real rocks? This would be better suited for an after school program.
