Explore place value through re-writing these two-digit numbers in expanded form. For example, 47 becomes 40 + 7. There is one example to model this, and scholars complete 14 more on their own. Be sure they understand this process as splitting the numeral into tens and ones, and consider using base ten blocks to tangibly represent it. For the second section, mathematicians write in a missing number for each expanded form (i.e. ___ + 6 = 86). Again, all of these are two-digit numbers. Some are missing the tens place and others the ones place.
