Here is a week-long lesson plan on the roles of family members designed for first graders. In it, learners share stories of their families, listen to books about families read to them by their teacher, complete homework assignments and in-class assignments that are all about families, and create a large chart that lists the number of family members each student has. The lesson plan covers a lot of aspects of family life, and would be a good one to implement as a way of getting to know your pupils better.
