Get your young writers using figurative language by making a game of it. Give groups a paper bag full of commonplace objects,, and have them describe them using figurative language. Afterward, other groups will try to guess what is being described. A graphic organizer and modeling make this activity accessible. Teach this activity in conjunction with Langston Hughes' poem "Passing Love" or another poem heavy in figurative language.
