“When a great truth once gets abroad in the world, no power on earth can imprison it, or prescribe its limits, or suppress it.” These words come from Frederick Douglass’ April, 1888 speech to the International Council of Women. One of the few men invited to address the convention, Douglas had long been a supporter of women’s rights, and his support is clearly evident in this excerpt from his remarks. Have your orators examine the rhetorical devises used in his speech and then craft their own. A link to the full text of Douglass’ remarks is included.
