This lesson is a preparation for reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. It discusses the popularity of the book and the fact that it is one of the most controversial novels ever published. It includes links to a Discovery Education Video about Huck Finn (Registration required) and to a Harvard Education Letter: "Why Huck Finn Belongs in Classrooms" written by an African American professor. After students read the letter they are to consider their thoughts as to whether it should be used in classrooms.
