For kids who love movies, figuring out a schedule for the maximum number that can be seen in one day is not only a good demonstration of Common Core mathematical practices, but also a highly motivating activity. Robert Kaplinsky constructed this activity to open a class discussion and focus on problem solving. With more than one right answer, third and fourth graders will have to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. There are two student options that make it appropriate for both third or fourth grade classrooms, or a wide range of learning ability within one classroom.
