A tube worm's outer covering is made of chitin, the same material that makes up the shells of lobsters and crabs. Scholars create tube worms and analyze and discuss the longevity of organisms living near cold seeps. They then discuss and design organisms capable of living near deep-sea vents and the unique properties all of these organisms have that may be beneficial for humans.

Instructional Ideas
- When combined with other actives in the series, it makes for a nice unit on the abyss
Classroom Considerations
- Depending upon classes, it could take six to eight days to complete the entire activity
- Assumes learners understand chemosynthesis and have already discussed cold seeps
- Needs only include art supplies, butcher paper, markers and a few copies of charts
- Part eight in a series of 10
Pros
- Because the activity calls for pupils to create organisms, it is great for those who are kinesthetic learners
- Provides resources, keys, extensions, and evaluation ideas
