This vocabulary-in-context strategy can be applied to any book that learners read with you; however the activity here is designed around Byron Byrton's fiction book, Airplane. First, introduce the new words you will learn: attendant, cargo, cockpit, fuel, and runway. Although it's suggested you choose three, decide how many to use based on your class. Review the word meanings before reading the story aloud, asking kids to raise their hands when they hear one of the words. There are comprehension questions for each to get scholars making connections to familiar concepts; use these anytime during the lesson.
