Combine vocabulary in context with art history using Jonah Winter's colorful biography Frida. Although there are quite a few words you could teach from this text, four are listed here with connecting questions: ill, imitate, miracle, and style. Introduce them before reading the story aloud, asking pupils to raise a hand when they hear one. Do they notice context clues, as well? The questions here are intended to create outside connections with familiar concepts, and this format can easily be expanded to include other words. Take a look at the graphic organizers as possible homework.
