Read about the opportunities that women had during World War II to work in jobs that had previously been unimaginable. To assist working mothers, the first childcare programs were begun, and efforts were made to make jobs in the defense industry appeal to women and also to reassure men that women would still be feminine. Minority women faced obstacles to obtaining the preferred jobs, as did Japanese Americans. After the war, many women returned to fulltime domestic roles, but not all.
