Layers of Rock

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet
This Layers of Rock lesson plan also includes:

Juvenile geologists drill clear plastic straws down into a playdough sedimentary rock model, pulling out sample rock cores. As they analyze their cores, they apply the law of superposition and discover that originally horizontal layers can become tilted over time. A worksheet is included for recording observations. This very valuable visual activity is materials-heavy since the play dough cannot be reused. If this poses a problem, consider doing it as a class demonstration instead. It is an A+ activity for studying sedimentary rocks!
