Sometimes all you need is a good heading to determine the main idea in a block of text. Young readers learn how to use headings to guild them to determining the main idea. They practice as a class, in pairs, and then on their own. The instructional activity does stress that it's not just the heading, but the heading and evidence from the text that will help them pin-point the main idea.
