Lesson 2: Chief Executives Compared: The Federalist Papers

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Fix the Articles of Confederation or develop a new constitution? That was the question facing the Founding Fathers. Several of those in favor of a new constitution published a series of essays, collected in the Federalist Papers, urging New Yorkers to ratify the Constitution drafted in1787. Class members read an excerpt from Alexander Hamilton's essay, "The Real Character of the Executive," and compile a list of what Hamilton felt should be the powers and responsibilities of the United States president.
