“. . . the car looked as it had caught some terrible disease.” Pairs read and then illustrate a passage from either “The Year I Drove through the Car Wash” or “Riding Is an Exercise of the Mind” in preparation for a discussion of audience and author’s purpose. As they present their visual to the class, the team explains why they chose their images and how the passage helps develop the author’s purpose. Part two of the lesson asks learners to apply what they have learned to magazine advertisements. The referenced stories, while not included, can be accessed on the Internet.
