Learners explore scientific notation and the structure of the metric system.  In this middle school mathematics lesson, students read How Much is a Million? by David M. Schwartz to introduce learners to the need for scientific notation.  Students explore the relationship between metrics and the base ten system as they convert within the metric system.  The lesson includes an optional video component.
