What three readily available things would you grab in case of an emergency? That's the question that launches a unit study of William Golding's The Lord of the Flies. After sharing their choices, class members read Golding's rationale for selecting the island as a microcosm. Next, scholars create microcosms that depict their view of society and use the "I Notice; I Wonder" strategy to analyze the various displays.

Instructional Ideas
- Review symbolism by setting up a display of objects (American flag, a cross, a dollar sign, caduceus, etc.) and asking class members to identify the object as well as the idea it represents
Classroom Considerations
- First of eight lessons in the Lord of the Flies Unit
- The lessons are cumulative and designed to be used in order
- Requires a projection device for the slide show, materials for building a microcosm, and copies of the "Lord of the Flies as Microcosm" worksheet
- Readers need a copy of the novel and access to devices loaded with Google's Jamboard
Pros
- Teacher's notes add information about the novel and suggestions for how to support readers
Cons
- None
