Some like it hot! Scholars observe both exothermic and endothermic reactions as part of the carbon dioxide oxygen cycle. First, scientists demonstrate (or watch) a chemical reaction to create pure oxygen using fire for confirmation. Then, pupils observe and test a chemical reaction to create carbon dioxide by putting out the fire.

Instructional Ideas
- Due to the safety issues with fire, present as a demonstration rather than as a hands-on activity
- Create your own questions or homework assignment to support the lesson
Classroom Considerations
- Carefully follow the clean-up instructions at the end of the demonstrations to prevent unexpected fires
- Some smoke detectors are more sensitive than others; you might need to notify administrators before completing the experiment
- Two activities are included and can be completed in one class period.
Pros
- Discussion points are included with answers
- Reactions are easily observable
Cons
- Working with fire makes presents a safety risk
