App Overview
This visually appealing app lets you adjust the complexity of problems, allows you "blackboard" space to work out the problems, and shows how to solve problems through a tutorial-type setting. It takes advantage of a tablet's ability to allow users to write either with a finger or stylus to work out problems.
There are many customizable settings that can be named and saved.
Setting Options
- Number of problems (1-250 questions)
- Operators (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, squares (less than500), cubes(less than 50), and square root (less than 100)
- Vertical or horizontal problem arrangement (+, -, x, /)
- Answer style (multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, keypad)
- Number (integers) range (-9999 to 9999)
- Certain numbers needed in problems (+,-, x, /)
- Maximum answer
- Allow negative answers even if negative number don't appear in expressions
- Equation types (answer type: 2 + 4 = ? , missing first number x - 5 = 7, or missing second number 7x= 235 or 81/x =9)
- Timer (none, elapsed, countdown)
- Student/user name, and save results
- Results include the number of problems, number skipped, number answered correctly, and the amount of time spent
The main part of this app consists of quiz activity where you answer questions based on the arithmetic operator's set in settings. If you don't understand how to solve a problem, there is a feature that shows you how to solve it. After a quiz is complete, you can look at specific problems, how much time was spent, and what answer was given. You can also see how to solve it correctly, and take a re-quiz on the problems you got wrong. Quiz results can also be e-mailed.
Additional Activities
- Find the Sign Activity: Given an equation with the operator missing, you need to fill in the appropriate operator. It has three modes: easy (+, -), normal (+,-,x), hard (+, -, x, /)
- Equality/Inequality Activity: Also has three modes: easy (compare two numbers to determine <.>,=), normal (compare one expression with a number) or hard (compare two expressions)
- Math Match Activity: Match an expression with a number. You can change the size of the game board to increase the difficulty.
Instructional Ideas
Use this app as for practice, or as a quiz. Results can be e-mailed. A useful feature is the ability to see how long a student spent on a particular problem. The additional activities can be utilized by early finishers or those who need more variety to stay engaged.
Classroom Considerations
Preset settings can be saved in the documents folder for pupils to upload and use in the app. This allows them to work at their own pace, and allows a teacher to control and set milestones and goals, or customize settings for individual learners.
While the settings allow for the content to be limited in order to address the level and some Common Core standards in kindergarten, this app is probably better for slightly older learners. It could, however, be adapted for younger, more advanced learners.
