For beginners, present multiplication as repeated addition to give them a familiar context. They examine grouped sets of objects and add up the groups to get a total. Then, learners translate the addition sets to a basic multiplication concept (e.g. 4 twos = ___ or ____ fours = ____). These eight problems are scaffolded nicely to get scholars doing more on their own as they go. The steps are outlined in an example problem. Once they have finished, introduce the multiplication symbol as you review.
