Biography of Hiram Rhoades Revels, who is best remembered as not only the first African American to hold a seat in the U.S. Senate, but also for his dedication to improving the spiritual and educational needs of the African American communities of the many states. To bring an end to Reconstruction terror in the South, he proposed giving full citizenship to ex-Confederate soldiers and to ousting the "carpet bag" government in Mississippi.
