How many different ways can you represent a whole? In a picture that represents six parts (two of which are shaded), learners are asked to label the parts appropriately to show how three different mathematical interpretations can be correct. The purpose of this task to for children to understand that when a whole is not defined, the parts that are being represented remain indefinite. Therefore, learners can define the fraction based on their own reasoning. The activity is a great opportunity for pupils to incorporate their creative thinking into a general perception of fractions. Can be used as an instructional tool or as an in-class assignment
