One subspecies, Spermophilus brunneus brunneus, lives only in about two dozen mountain meadows, and in 1998, biologists counted only 500 of them. Learn more about the Spermophilus brunneus, more commonly known as an Idaho Ground Squirrel, in this easy-to-read species overview by the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History.
