National Museum of Natural History: American Mammals: Jones's Pocket Gopher

Curated by ACT

Many rodents that are adapted to arid conditions--pocket mice, harvest mice, grasshopper mice, deer mice, kangaroo rats, and ground squirrels--occur in the same regions as Jones's Pocket Gopher in western Texas and eastern New Mexico, but only the pocket gophers (family Geomyidae) have a fossorial (that is, underground) lifestyle. Jones's Pocket Gophers are very difficult to distinguish from four other pocket gopher species without genetic and geographic data. Learn more about the Geomys knoxjonesi, more commonly known as a Jones's Pocket Gopher, in this easy-to-read species overview by the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History.
