[Free Registration/Login Required] The mystery of what happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke has gripped imaginations for centuries. Now archaeology may be able to provide answers before long. This article describes the history of the ill-fated Roanoke Colony and explains how a secret symbol on a map in the British Museum led archaeologists to excavate a location near Roanoke Island that they call Site X. Along with a second excavation on Hatteras Island, these sites have yielded tantalizing clues but no definitive answers as yet. (Published Aug. 10, 2015)
