Hook new mathematicians with a candy-themed approach to addition and subtraction. They examine 10 numbers (not exceeding 19) printed on candy wrappers. For each, learners calculate and record numbers with values one more and one less than the center number. This same concept is at work in the last four problems where they count the candies in jars and draw another set in an empty jar that is one more or one less in number. Extend this with real candy (or objects) in a jar.
